Mars Bigfoot
“Our knowledge of Bigfoot in America begins with Indian tales, folklore, and legend, which demonstrate a prehistoric knowledge of unknown hairy, erect primates on the continent.”
                                                                                           -Loren Coleman
The “folklore” or “myth”, as the Christian right refers to Native American tribal stories, exceptionally documented ancient encounters with “Star Beings”. It is told that the gods descended from the stars, “to impregnate barren females in remote villages.” The women chosen, for what was perceived as nothing short of a miracle, would raise and nurture these “Star Children” until the age of six years old. At this time, the “Star Beings” or “Gods” would descend again, and reclaim their scion.
The tribes also related tales of the “wild men of the woods”, the “ngagi” and numerous other names. Science has since shown us that these beasts are commonly known as orangutans, apes and mountain gorillas. But there are more stories, stories describing an eight foot tall, hairy, humanoid creature. A fowl odor observed during a hunt certainly meant danger was near. The creature’s wood knocking, it is said, can be heard for miles from their nests deep within the woods.
So what was feared more, “Gods” or the unknown monsters sharing the woods? If Catholicism has taught me anything, it is God who should be feared. Never one to be tempted by organized religion, my fear lies with the monster.
NASA, of all organizations, brings forward one of the most interesting pieces of fortean imagery since the infamous “face on mars”. Now, the ‘face on mars’ was my first real foray into the mystique of conspiracy. The picture in question was taken in the 1970’s by the Viking spacecraft, and has been the subject of much debate. Is it a face or just some shadow anomaly? Is it an archaic alien structure or pareidolia? As the years go by and the debates fade away we are only left with the photo.

Without getting too caught up in the “face debate” I would like to shift focus to another, much more recent photo taken on Mars. This picture, taken in 2004 by the Mars explorer Spirit, shows that maybe water isn’t the only new discovery NASA has made on Mars. The photo clearly shows a humanoid figure, perhaps running down a martian hill or maybe it’s a martian Bigfoot fighting another figure. (Look at the dark mass on a rock just below the original figure.)

Fascinating. But don’t let your imagination run too wild. When viewing the entire full image, this figure, NASA claims, is merely 2 inches in height. The web site BadAstronomy.com, scoffed at the idea, “Puhlllleeeeze. A man? It’s a tiny rock only a few inches high. It’s only a few feet from the rover!” While possible, and probably the right reaction, I will revel in this photo of a “Mars Bigfoot”.
